Flight into icing conditions introduces the risk of ice accretion to helicopter rotors. To understand and avoid the dangers related to rotor icing, test facilities such as the NASA Glenn Icing Research Tunnel have been developed. Due to the confined test section size of most current icing test facilities, an icing test on a full-chord helicopter rotor blade is not possible. To fulfill the research need of a novel full-scale-chord rotor icing test facility, the Adverse Environment Rotor Test Stand (AERTS) was designed and constructed at the Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence, at the Pennsylvania State University. This book gives a comprehensive review of the current aircraft icing research. Ice accretion experiments were conducted to validate ice shape reproduction capabilities of this facility. Classical ice scaling methods were introduced and implemented to ensure experimental ice shape reproduction for varying chord-size blades. The validity of applying scaling laws to low-thrusting rotors was demonstrated. The comprehensive aircraft icing database provided in this book can be applied widely to the aircraft design and testing procedures.

Smart Foam for Active Vibration and Noise Control

A new class of smart foams is introduced to simultaneously control the vibration and noise radiation from flexible plates coupled with acoustic cavities. The proposed smart foam consists of passive foam/piezoelectric composite layers. The proposed smart foam can simultaneously control structural and acoustic cavity modes over a broad frequency range. A comprehensive theoretical study of the smart foam elements is introduced, in order to optimize the design and performance of this hybrid actuator. A finite element model is developed to study the interactions among the smart foam components and with an acoustic cavity. The developed finite element model is a reduced 2D model, which was compared with the original 3D model where it managed to capture all the targeted dynamic characteristics. The developed theoretical and experimental techniques will provide invaluable tools for the design and application of the proposed smart foam to a wide variety of systems such as passenger cars, helicopter, aircraft cabins and other flexible enclosures, where their operation as quiet platforms is critical to the success of their mission.

Design and dynamic modeling of autonomous coaxi...

This book is a result of the European framework project muFly, aiming at the design and realization of an autonomous micro helicopter comparable to a small bird in size and mass. It introduces two prototype designs for the muFly helicopter: a modular one for fast sensor and actuator exchange and easy configuration testing, and a highly integrated design to reduce the total mass and integrate the complete sensor set for autonomous flight. Furthermore, a theoretical foundation for coaxial micro helicopter design is laid. In particular focus are passive stabilization and steering principles of the helicopter. A modular dynamic model is developed, which incorporates the characteristics of a hingeless rotor system, two optional steering principles, and a stabilizer bar module, which is also validated experimentally. Finally, the dynamic model is used for a design parameter study of the most relevant system design parameters. It aims at passive roll and pitch stabilization of the helicopter without a stabilizer bar. By illuminating the aspects of prototype design, dynamic modeling, simulation, and design parameter optimization, this book is a contribution towards palm-sized MAVs.

Thin-Walled Composite Beams

This is the first monograph devoted to the foundation of the theory of composite anisotropic thin-walled beams and to its applications in various problems involving the aeronautical/aerospace, helicopter, naval and mechanical structures. Throughout the theoretical part, an effort was made to provide the treatment of the subject by using the equations of the 3-D elasticity theory. Non-classical effects such as transverse shear, warping constraint, anisotropy of constituent materials yielding the coupling of twist-bending (lateral), bending (transversal)-extension have been included and their implications have been thoroughly analyzed. Thermal effects have been included and in order to be able to circumvent their deleterious effects, functionally graded materials have been considered in their construction. Implications of the application of the tailoring technique and of the active feedback control on free vibration, dynamic response, instability and aeroelasticity of such structures have been amply investigated. Special care was exercised throughout this work to address and validate the adopted solution methodologies and the obtained results against those available in the literature and obtained via numerical or experimental means.

Theory of Adaptive Fiber Composites

Adaptive structural systems in conjunction with multifunctional materials facilitate technical solutions with a wide spectrum of applications and a high degree of integration. By virtue of combining the actuation and sensing capabilities of piezoelectric materials with the advantages of fiber composites, the anisotropic constitutive properties may be tailored according to requirements and the failure behavior can be improved. Such adaptive fiber composites are very well-suited for the task of noise and vibration reduction. In this respect the helicopter rotor system represents a very interesting and widely perceptible field of application. The occurring oscillations can be reduced with aid of aerodynamic couplings via fast manipulation of the angle of attack, being induced by twist actuation of the rotor blade. On the one hand the sensing properties may be used to determine the current state of deformation, while on the other hand the actuation properties may be used to attain the required state of deformation. The implementation of such concepts requires comprehensive knowledge of the theoretical context, which shall be illuminated in the work at hand from the examination of the material behavior to the simulation of the rotating structure.

Helicopter Test and Evaluation

Although a number of texts on helicopter aerodynamics have been written, few have explained how the various theories concerning rotorborne flight underpin practical flight test and evaluation. This book combines theoretical information on aerodynamics, stability, control and performance with details of evaluation methodologies and practical guidance on the conduct of helicopter flight tests. For each topic the relevant theory is explained briefly and followed by details of the practical aspects of testing a conventional helicopter. These include: safety considerations planning the tests the most efficient way to conduct individual flights Where possible typical test results are presented and discussed. The book draws on the authors extensive experience in flight test and flight test training and will appeal not only to professionals working in the area of rotorcraft test and evaluation, but also to helicopter pilots, rotorcraft designers and manufacturers and final year undergraduates of aeronautical engineering
