Flight into icing conditions introduces the risk of ice accretion to helicopter rotors. To understand and avoid the dangers related to rotor icing, test facilities such as the NASA Glenn Icing Research Tunnel have been developed. Due to the confined test section size of most current icing test facilities, an icing test on a full-chord helicopter rotor blade is not possible. To fulfill the research need of a novel full-scale-chord rotor icing test facility, the Adverse Environment Rotor Test Stand (AERTS) was designed and constructed at the Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence, at the Pennsylvania State University. This book gives a comprehensive review of the current aircraft icing research. Ice accretion experiments were conducted to validate ice shape reproduction capabilities of this facility. Classical ice scaling methods were introduced and implemented to ensure experimental ice shape reproduction for varying chord-size blades. The validity of applying scaling laws to low-thrusting rotors was demonstrated. The comprehensive aircraft icing database provided in this book can be applied widely to the aircraft design and testing procedures.

It was the first successful twin-engined, twin rotor helicopter in the world. In 1944 the United States Navy issued a requirement for a large rescue helicopter with a capacity for ten occupants. The design was originally started by Douglas Aircraft and designated XHJD-1, following the merger with McDonnell it was re-designated the XHJH-1 before it was completed. The XHJH-1 first flew in August 1944 and had twin side-by-side 46 ft (14 m) rotors at the end of pylon wings which turned in opposite directions. Each rotor was powered by a 450 hp (336 kW) Pratt & Whitney R-985 engine.
A new class of smart foams is introduced to simultaneously control the vibration and noise radiation from flexible plates coupled with acoustic cavities. The proposed smart foam consists of passive foam/piezoelectric composite layers. The proposed smart foam can simultaneously control structural and acoustic cavity modes over a broad frequency range. A comprehensive theoretical study of the smart foam elements is introduced, in order to optimize the design and performance of this hybrid actuator. A finite element model is developed to study the interactions among the smart foam components and with an acoustic cavity. The developed finite element model is a reduced 2D model, which was compared with the original 3D model where it managed to capture all the targeted dynamic characteristics. The developed theoretical and experimental techniques will provide invaluable tools for the design and application of the proposed smart foam to a wide variety of systems such as passenger cars, helicopter, aircraft cabins and other flexible enclosures, where their operation as quiet platforms is critical to the success of their mission.
